Poland’s foreign ministry has called for “the respect of fundamental civic freedoms” in Venezuela, where a political crisis has escalated in recent days amid growing efforts by the opposition to unseat the country's socialist president.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the foreign ministry in Warsaw said: “Following the developments in Venezuela, Poland calls for the respect of fundamental civic freedoms, including the freedom of assembly.”

The Polish foreign ministry added that “the National Assembly in Venezuela enjoys democratic legitimacy and it is the Assembly that bears the responsibility for starting a peaceful political process.

“The appropriate step is to call general presidential elections with the respect for democratic standards, as called for by the European Union.”

According to the Polish foreign ministry, “maintaining a peaceful character of current changes remains an overarching priority” at the moment.

“Poland, acting within the European Union, in cooperation with countries of the region, will strive to foster conditions for peaceful democratic transformation in Venezuela, as demanded by its society,” the Polish foreign ministry said in its statement.

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president on Wednesday, winning the backing of Washington and many Latin American nations, and prompting socialist Nicolas Maduro, who has led the oil-rich nation since 2013, to sever diplomatic relations with the United States, the Reuters news agency has reported.
