Public broadcaster Polish Radio has collected almost PLN 1.2 million (EUR 277,000) to help children in Mariupol in war-ravaged eastern Ukraine.

“We are very happy that we managed to gather so much money,” Izabela Sawicka, one of the organisers of the charity drive, has said.

She added: “The children are waiting for our help, and they are glad that people from Poland want to help them.”

According to Polish Radio’s IAR news agency, children in Mariupol are suffering poverty and have limited access to education.

To raise the funds, Polish Radio in December auctioned gifts from celebrities, including boots signed by Polish football superstar Robert Lewandowski, and a racquet belonging to Polish former tennis player Agnieszka Radwańska.
