Polish PM to attend post-election summit in Brussels

Summit participants were expected to sum up the weekend's elections to the European Parliament and start official talks on filling key posts in EU institutions.

The new heads of the European Commission, the European Council and the European Parliament are expected to be appointed in the coming weeks, in addition to the next chief of the European Central Bank and the new EU top diplomat, Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Poland's Deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymański said ahead of the summit: "We certainly still need very long and very discreet negotiations, because the ones that have been taking place in the European Union so far do not show a clear perspective on this matter.”

He added: “Certainly, today the loudest candidates will not be the only ones.”

Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaite; the EU's chief negotiator for Brexit Michel Barnier; the current deputy president of the European Commission Frans Timmermans; and the European People’s Party leader Manfred Weber are among the contenders to become the next president of the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, the IAR news agency reported.

In addition to talks on appointments to various EU positions, the summit was expected to focus on the functioning of the European Parliament after the elections.
