Poles from across the southern US state and neighbouring states, including Oklahoma and New Mexico, came to the meeting, according to reports.

Duda told the attendees about his talks a day earlier with US leader Donald Trump at the White House.

The Polish and US presidents on Wednesday approved plans for a stepped-up American military presence in Poland.

Duda said in Houston on Thursday that Poland's authorities were taking steps to strengthen the country's security. He added that America's Trump was a credible partner for Poland.

Duda said: “I am very specifically discussing Polish affairs and common interests with President Donald Trump.”

He added: “This is not hot air. We agree, we sign documents, and things are happening very quickly.”

During the event, Duda thanked the Polish American community for cultivating Polish culture and traditions.

Seven people received state honours from the president.

It is estimated that Texas is home to about 250,000 Poles and people of Polish origin. Most of them, about 50,000, live in Houston.

During his six-day trip to the United States, the Polish president is also scheduled to visit the western states of Nevada and California.
