Ahead of the summit of EU leaders in the Belgian capital, Morawiecki told reporters that Poland’s support for specific candidates depended on these people's views.

Thursday's summit talks in Brussels were expected to focus on appointments to key EU posts, including that of the next president of the European Commission and the new head of the European Council.

Morawiecki said before the Brussels summit that “the most important thing is what views, positions and standpoints will be presented” by those seeking to be named to top EU roles.

“This will be the deciding factor of whether or not we grant our support," he added.

Morawiecki also told reporters that Poland’s position on who should fill senior posts in Brussels accorded with those of its regional partners as part of the Visegrad Group of four Central European nations.

"We want the voice of Central Europe to be heard so that our interests are secured in the right way," Morawiecki said.

The Visegrad Group (V4) is a regional cooperation platform that brings together Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Morawiecki said last month that appointments to top EU jobs should be balanced and that key positions should be filled by people with experience in politics and an ability to build consensus.
