Witnesses told the Al Arabiya TV station that snipers were on roofs picking off protesters while tanks patrolled streets.

“People are being slaughtered like sheep while walking in the street,” another unnamed witness told Associated Press.

“I saw with my own eyes one young boy on a motorcycle who was carrying vegetables being run over by a tank.”

US Secretary of state Hilary Clinton claims that at least 2,000 have lost their lives since protests began five months ago.

Poland’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that, “Following another advance in the crisis in Syria […] Poland appeals to the authorities in Damascus for immediate cessation of their acts of violence and military aggression against their own citizens.”

The statement continues: “In the face of this unprecedented situation, Poland appeals to the UN to put an end to the bloodshed in Syria, as well as to Syrian authorities’ violation of the UN Charter and destabilization of the region.”

As the current president of the EU, “Poland expresses its solidarity with Syrian society. Poland will support efforts – within the EU and as a member of the international community – to help victims of repression, punish the perpetrators and seek Syria’s democratization,” the statement by Foreign Minister spokesman Marcin Bosacki says.
