Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg claims “it is clear Poland hosted a secret CIA prison to detain and torture Al-Qaeda suspects.”

The commissioner told Polish public television, Saturday: “It is clear that Poland hosted secret CIA prisons between December 2002 and September 2003. We know who was held there and what interrogation methods were used. They can be described as torture.”

Mr Hammarberg mentioned the names of two Al-Qaeda members held in Poland: Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri and Abu Zubaida.

Last May Abd al-Rahim al-Nashi filed a case against Poland with the European Court of Human Rights.

The Council of Europe official said he had briefed Poland’s foreign minister Radosław Sikorski on the results of his investigation and asked him for diplomatic assistance in his efforts to convince the Obama administration that Europe is committed to explain the issues relating to CIA prisons and that, for this to be achieved, there is a need to declassify the documents required for judiciary proceedings.

A spokesman for the Polish Foreign Ministry said that it does not comment on the problem of CIA prisons. (mk/pg)
