The attack took place in the southern part of the Ghazni province.

The patrol was on its way to check the implementation of unnamed auxiliary projects when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded under their armored vehicle.

Two other soldiers were wounded and their condition has been described as “stable”.

Thirty year-old Nowakowski served in the Polish armed forces since 2003. He was a rifleman in the 17th Wielkopolska Mechanised Brigade, in the battalion of the motorized infantry in Międzyrzec.

Lance Corporal Nowakowski, who was single, is the 30th Pole to die in Afghanistan since Poland took part in the ISAF multinational mission in the country.

Poland has 2,500 troops stationed in Afghanistan. (pg/di)
