Polish soldier dies in Afghanistan

One Polish soldier was killed and another injured yesterday morning after a mine exploded under the armoured vehicle in which they were travelling.

The Rosomak (Wolverine) vehicle was part of a Polish convoy operating in the western province of Ghazni.
Press officer Major Julita Mirowska has named the deceased man as Private Mariusz Deptula. He was 28, and had served as a professional soldier since 2007.
He is survived by a wife and daughter. The victim's family has been informed about the death.
The second man is reported as being in a stable condition.
Private Deptula was the 31st Polish casualty in the Afghanistan war, which is now in its tenth year.
There are currently 2,600 Polish military personnel remain in the country, and 400 troops are on reserve in Poland. The numbers are due to be slightly reduced by 300, with just 200 waiting in reserve. (nh/pg)
