"Spain is at a historic crossroads, Buzek has said. “I would like to hereby convey my support and solidarity for the far-reaching reforms Spain will embark upon to tackle unemployment, reach fiscal stability and regain competitiveness and sustainable growth.

“Determination and endurance will be of paramount importance to give a clear signal to the stability of the markets," said Buzek, a former prime minister of Poland, following the landslide by the Spanish conservatives.

Rajoy’s ‘People’s Party’ won 186 of the 350 seats in parliament in the ballot yesterday, leaving the outgoing Socialists, led by Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, with just 110 MPs in the lower house.

Spanish voters blamed the Socialists’ last eight years in power for the economic crisis which has engulfed the country.

Hard times lie ahead,” PM-elect Rajoy told supporters in Madrid last night. “We are going to govern in the most delicate situation Spain has faced in 30 years.” (pg)
