No presidential pardon for Pole convicted of rape in UK

President Lech Kaczyński, during his visit to Vilnius on Saturday, announced that he is not planning to pardon Jakub Tomczak, the 24-year-old Pole from Poznań who was sentenced for double life for brutally raping a woman from Exeter, England.
Jakub Tomczak will probably serve his sentence in a Polish prison.
The President, asked about the possibility of a pardon, stressed that he has no detailed information on the case, but emphasized that he does not pardon rapists.
Over a hundred people – the family and friends of the sentenced Pole – marched in Poznań, western Poland, on Friday in protest against his sentence, strongly believing Jakub Tomczak is innocent.
In Poland, pardoning is a constitutional prerogative of the Head of State.
Tomczak was convicted in January of brutally raping a 48 year old woman in Exeter, western England and sentenced to two consecutive 25 year prison sentences. (mo)
