Celebrations began on Sunday in the late poet's home city of Lodz, central Poland.

“I think that this will be a year when no one will be able to forget about Tuwim for a moment, not only in Lodz, but hopefully across all Poland,” commented Deputy Mayor of Lodz, as cited by the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Tuwim's death, as well as the 100th anniversary of the publication of his literary debut.

Tuwim's first published verse, “A Request”, was recited during Sunday's inauguration, followed by rock versions of his works performed by the group Jet Rambo.

Born in 1894 into a relatively well-off Jewish family, Tuwim went on to become one of the most celebrated wits of the inter-war period.

He co-founded the Skamander group of progressive poets, and was one of Warsaw's most distinctive figures, holding court at the fashionable Ziemianska cafe.

He also wrote for children, and his playful use of the Polish language continues to delight both young and old readers to this day.

Tuwim spent most of the Second World War in the United States, but returned to Poland after the war, offering his support to the communist regime.

A web site detailing exhibitions and events connected with Tuwim Year is set to be launched in the coming weeks.

Poland's Ministry of Culture has pledged to contribute 800,000 zloty (194,000 euro) to help organise events, supplementing funds provided by the city of Lodz. Meanwhile, Minister of Culture Bogdan Zdrojewski has expressed his hopes that a centre devoted to Tuwim will be created in Lodz, so as to continue this year's work. (nh)
