Milosz's Captive Mind goes Chinese

The Captive Mind, Czeslaw Milosz's seminal study on how intellectuals were won over by communism, has been published in Chinese.

Originally released in Paris in 1953, the book was banned for decades in Milosz's native country, and the author himself spent several decades in exile before returning to live in Poland, following the collapse of the Iron Curtain in 1989.
The Nobel Prize-winner's book is a thinly veiled exploration of specific figures, including the writers Tadeusz Borowski (This way for the gas, Ladies and Gentlemen) and Jerzy Andrzejewski (Ashes and Diamonds).
Guangxi Normal University Press
The Chinese edition was translated by Professor Yi Li Jun and Professor Wu Lan, published by Guangxi Normal University Press.
Yi Li Jun has already translated such classics as Henryk Sienkiewicz's Trilogy, as well as Adam Mickiewicz's Pan Tadeusz and Witold Gombrowicz's Ferdydurke.
Wu Lan has translated such works as Ryszard Kapuscinski's Travels with Herodotus, and Stefan Zeromski's The Story of Sin.
The Polish Embassy in Beijing marked the event by holding a press conference with the translators last Wednesday. (nh)
