Dozens of complete films by acclaimed Polish directors including Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Kieslowski are available from Friday on Youtube.
Ashes and Diamonds: Studio KADR
The movies are accessible on special Youtube channels created for two of Poland's most venerable film studios, TOR and KADR.
Film buffs can watch the movies free of charge, although the works are interspersed with ad breaks.
The studios have confirmed that revenues from advertisements will be channelled towards digital restorations of classic films, as well as new productions.
Among the films available on Youtube in the first wave are Andrzej Wajda's celebrated WWII movie Ashes and Diamonds (1958), Juliusz Machulski's Sex Mission (1983), and Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colours Trilogy.
Although KADR in particular has seen fewer releases since the collapse of communism, which caused a funding crisis in Poland's film industry, the studio has bounced back in recent years, with three consecutive hits, Borys Lankosz's Reverse (2009), Jan Komasa's Suicide Room (2011) and Leszek Dawid's You are God (2012).
