The first part of the concert will feature pieces from Domingo's CD Amore Infinito, in which writings by Karol Wojtyła, the future Pope, are set to music.

In the second part, Domingo will present a selection of popular opera arias as well as hits from operettas and musicals.

Amore Infinito was released in 2008. Domingo had himself asked John Paul II for permission to use his writings.

Mayor of Poznan Ryszard Grobelny noted at a press conference that the event will be highly important for several reasons. It will not only be a special tribute to the Polish pontiff on the day of his canonization, it will also mark the beginning of the celebrations of the 1050th anniversary of Christianity on Polish lands, falling in 2016.

The concert will be held on the International Trade Fair grounds, in a pavilion that can seat several thousand spectators.

Pope John Paul II died on 2 April 2005 after 26 years as pontiff.

His canonization at the Vatican on 27 April will mark the final stage in his path to sainthood, following his beatification on 1 May 2011. (mk/nh).
