The event, which was organised by the German Film Institute, pitted ten films by both new and upcoming directors against each other in the main competition.

Head of the jury Jan Harlan, a German producer who collaborated for many years with Stanley Kubrick, praised the Polish film for its “precise script, excellent direction, and for keeping viewers gripped throughout.”

Harlan concluded that Ida is “a beautiful and fascinating film about a young girl who discovers that its she herself that she must count on.”

Pawel Pawlikowski's film explores the plight of trainee nun who discovers that she is a Jewish orphan, whose parents fell victim to the Holocaust.

Shot in black and white, the film marks a triumphant return to Poland for Pawlikowski, whose family emigrated in 1971 when he was 14.

The film has garnered considerable international acclaim, winning the award for best film at the BFI London Film Festival, and the critic's choice prize at the Toronto International Film Festival, among others.

Besides the Golden Lily itself, Pawlikowski was awarded 10,000 euros in Wiesbaden. He revealed last month that his next film will also be a Polish project, loosely based on his parents' relationship, quipping that the movie will be “an Eastern European version of the Richard Burton-Elizabeth Taylor story.” (nh)
