Actor of the moment Robert Wieckiewicz, who recently played the lead role in Andrzej Wajda's Walesa: Man of Hope, plays Prosecutor Tadeusz Szacki on the trail of a murder in the picturesque town of Sandomierz.

The film marks the second feature of Borys Lankosz, who won international acclaim for his 2009 debut Reverse (Rewers), a black comedy set in Stalinist-era Warsaw.

Lankosz co-wrote the screenplay for A Grain of Truth with Miloszewski, whose thrillers about Prosecutor Szacki have been translated into a number of languages.

Besides a vivid portrayal of contemporary Poland, the novel grapples with ghosts from Poland's Jewish past.

“I would like this film to be not just entertainment, but also a contribution to a sober debate on certain topics that loom over our society today,” Lankosz told the Gazeta Wyborcza daily, before starting the shoot.

Meanwhile, author Miloszewski has reflected that Sandomierz is “good for a community-based crime story, because the whole of Polish history is reflected in it, and good for a crime story in general because it’s a very small place where they all know each other.”

A Grain of Truth is due to be released in October. (nh)
