The event, which is organised by the Jagiellonian University in cooperation with the American Consulate in Krakow, chimes in with a jubilee year for the former, with the university founded 650 years ago in 1364.

Although principally aimed at the student community, all gigs can be attended free of charge “by all blues lovers”, artistic director Bartosz Stawiarz has assured.

Denver-born star Corey Harris carved himself a niche as an acoustic blues guitarist in the 1990s.

His travels across Africa have influenced his work, and Martin Scorsese included the artist in his 1993 TV series The Blues, which explores the history of the genre.

Other stars due to perform at the festival include Canadian Son of Dave and Pole Wojciech Waglewski.

The festival runs until 11 May, and more details can be found on the event's official web site. (nh)
