Clapton played classics from his days with Cream as well as later solo material, and a rendition of “Tears in Heaven”, originally written following the tragic death of his son, provided a poignant moment in the festival.

The event was founded in 2010 by Darek Maciborek, a journalist who grew up in the town in the shadow of the former Nazi German death camps.

He set up the festival with the aim of “breaking the spell” over the area, by cultivating tolerance in a place synonymous with Nazi racism.

Previous headliners at the festival, which is staged at Oswiecim's MOSiR Stadium, have included Sting, Peter Gabriel and James Blunt.

Besides Clapton, this year's guests included Soundgarden, Balkan Beat Box and Luxtorpeda.(nh)
