A new art installation composed of talking golden deer was launched by Warsaw's Stalinist era Palace of Culture and Science on Tuesday.

The project was commissioned by the Teatr Dramatyczny (Dramatic Theatre), which has been based in the skyscraper since 1955.

Artist Eliza Proszczuk was invited by the theatre as part of a new programme to revamp the square in front of the building.

Plac Defilad (Parade Square), as the name suggests, was once a key platform for political propaganda during the communist era.

Proszczuk was asked to use the deer - which were formerly props from the theatre - in her design.

After painting them gold she took to the streets and recorded Varsovians thoughts on theatre and its meaning for the city.

The recordings have been integrated into the installation, giving the impression that the deer themselves are offering up their thoughts on the dramatic arts.

According to Proszczuk, she chose gold for its symbolism as taken from the golden bull of the Old Testament, as well as Buddha.

The deer will remain on the square until 15 August, after which new installations will appear on a revolving basis. (nh)
