As always, the event began with a parade through the streets of Lublin, this year led by a brass band from the Netherlands.

Over the next three days, festival-goers will be able savour over 80 street performances by troupes from across the world.

Jugglers, illusionists, clowns, buskers, trapeze artists and more will be taking part.

Besides the open-air events, about 40 performances will be held in marquees.

The idea of the carnival is to promote the so-called 'New Circus', which shuns the use of animals and focuses instead on storytelling.

The event was founded in 2008, and it has since established itself as one of the region's most eagerly anticipated annual events.

More information about the carnival can be found on the event's official website, and likewise on Facebook. (nh)
