The decision was taken unanimously by a commission set up by culture minister Małgorzata Omilanowską.

“Our decision was influenced by the stunning success of 'Ida' in its distribution worldwide,” said committee chairman Filip Bajon.

“The film was purchased by almost 60 countries, had a large audience in France and earned $3.5 million in the United States,” he added.

'Ida' is set in the early 1960s and explores the predicament of Anna (Agata Tzebuchowska), an orphan who is about to take her vows in a nunnery, only to discover that she is Jewish.

The film has won many awards internationally and in Poland and has been one of the most popular Polish movies worldwide in recent times.

The Academy Awards will be held next year at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre on Sunday February 22. (pg)
