His feature, entitled ‘I want more’, won the top honours in the ‘extraordinary originality and innovation’ category and has been praised by the jury of the 66th Prix Italia Competition in Turin for its ‘exceptional technical and editorial quality’.

The programme tells the story of Dominik Poloński, an outstanding Polish cellist who at the age of 27, facing the prospect of a spectacular career, developed a brain tumour and underwent four operations.

In 2009, after five years of rehabilitation, he returned to the stage, becoming the only cellist in the world using only the right hand.

Polish composer Olga Hans wrote two concertos for the right hand specially for him. In addition to giving public performances, he now pursues a teaching career at the Music Academy in Łódź.

In its verdict, the Prix Italia jury said that in Bartosz Panek’s feature it ‘greatly admired the use of sound in all its manifestations […] and the elegant manner in which it revealed the protagonist's passion and determination to us’. (mk/nh)
