The orchestra is conducted by its Music Director Jacek Kaspszyk and Russian-born virtuoso Ilya Gringolts is the soloist in Weinberg's Violin Concerto in G minor.

The recording session was held in the National Philharmonic Hall, the orchestra's home. The album will be included in the Warner Classics' international distribution network at the beginning of 2015.

Born in Warsaw in 1919, Weinberg was a Polish Jew who escaped the Nazis by fleeing into the Soviet Union. In 1943 he settled in Moscow, where he worked as a composer and pianist.

In 1953, he was arrested as part of Stalin's anti-Semitic purges, but was released after Stalin's death thanks to support from his close friend Dmitri Shostakovich. He died in Moscow in 1999, leaving a vast output of 27 symphonies, 17 string quartets, 6 operas and soundtracks for feature films and children's cartoons.

The last few years have seen a revival of interest in Weinberg's music. The English National Opera and the National Opera in Warsaw produced his opera The Passenger and there have been several CD recordings of his works. (mk/jb)
