Konwicki, a veteran of Poland's WWII underground Home Army (AK), was laid to rest in the Powazki Military Cemetery in Warsaw.

Minister of Culture Malgorzata Omilanowska described Konwicki as ''an exceptional man – a legend in Polish literature and film.

''In the recollections of friends, he appears as a personality combining sensitivity and warm-hearted wisdom, irony and sarcasm, bravery and determination.

''His death is a great loss for Polish literature and Polish film,'' she added.

''He will always endure in our grateful memory.'' (nh)
