Friday 13 February marks the fourth World Radio Day, whose aim is to raise awareness of the “importance of radio”.

The first World Radio Day took place in 2012 after it was proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2011.

According to UNESCO, the day is to encourage “decision makers to establish and provide access to information through radio” as well as boost “networking and international cooperation among broadcasters”.

The decision to mark the day on 13 February comes as United Nations Radio was established on the same date in 1946.

This year’s celebrations are held under the theme “Youth and Radio”.

Message from UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova. The fourth annual World Radio Day focuses on young women and men. On this occasion, UNESCO calls for greater social inclusion of the generation under 30 years old, which accounts for more than half of the world’s population.

According to UN statistics, there are over 2.4 billion radio receivers and over 51,000 radio stations worldwide.

In developing countries, at least 75 percent of households have access to radio. Between 2006 and 2013, there was a steady increase in online radio revenue worldwide from USD 278 million to USD 827 million, an average growth rate of 28 percent per year.

Poland’s public broadcaster, Polskie Radio / Polish Radio is also taking part in this year’s celebrations by participating in a special online stream which can be accessed here. (ss/jb)
