The Kraków district court has announced 25 February as the date of the hearing.

The 81-year-old film director is fighting an extradition request by the US over a charge of statutory rape in 1977. Polański pleaded guilty but fled the country after serving 42 days in jail. He has never set foot on US soil since.

According to Reuters, Polański’s lawyers in Kraków have announced that he is planning on attending the sitting later this month.

If the Kraków court decided to extradite Polański, the final decision will be taken by the Polish Ministry of Justice.

The director has dual Polish and French citizenship and has been working on a new film in the southern Polish city of Kraków. The project, which is set to start filming in mid 2015, is based on the Robert Harris book about the life of Alfred Dreyfus. (rg)
