Vietnamese maestro marks Chopin's 205th birthday

Celebrated Vietnamese pianist Dang Thai Son joined the National Philharmonic Orchestra in Warsaw at a special concert on Sunday marking the 205th anniversary of Fryderyk Chopin's birth.

The Vietnamese maestro began the evening with solo performances of works by Maurice Ravel.
He then joined the National Philharmonic Orchestra in a rendition of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 in D Minor.
In 1980, the pianist became the first ever Asian musician to win the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.
He will return to the Polish capital later this year to be a member of the jury in the forthcoming edition of the contest.
Born on 1 March 1810 (historians are divided on the precise date) Chopin began his career in Warsaw before emigrating aged 20. He settled in France, where he died in 1849, broken by illness. (nh)
