The movie follows the fortunes of two small-town lads who make it big during the 1990s, thanks to the emerging genre of disco polo.

Fusing elements of Italo disco with the bawdier side of Polish folk music, disco polo was for many the soundtrack to the heady years that followed the collapse of the Iron Curtain.

"For a moment we dreamed our American dream, and disco polo was the perfect accompaniment to those times, because this music is about the idea that everything is possible," commented director Maciej Bochniak, while promoting the film.

The director said that real life disco polo stars were wary of speaking to him at first, but when they grasped that his intention was not to mock them, they reminisced on their adventures with gusto.

Bochniak managed to secure the services of some of Poland's most acclaimed actors for the project, including Dawid Ogrodnik (Ida, Life Feels Good) and Tomasz Kot (Gods).

"From my observations, it seems that the people who are most ashamed of disco polo are those that have a problem with accepting their own background," the director reflected.

"Typically their whole family listened or listens to disco polo, and they grew up on that, but they came to the city and became so 'urban' that they're now ashamed of who they were and where they came from." (nh)
