The hall is the work of Barcelona-based firm Estudio Barozzi Veiga, and construction work began in April 2011.

It is located in the heart of Szczecin, on the historical site of the old ‘Konzerthaus’ which was demolished during the Second World War.

The facility comprises two halls, the main one seating 951, and the chamber hall seating 192, with a large window at the back of the audience bringing in natural light.

The other finalists are the student centre of the London School of Economics, Antinori Winery in Florence, the Danish Maritime Museum and the Ravernsburg Art Museum in Germany.

Over the coming weeks the jury members will visit each of the sites to evaluate the buildings first hand and gather information from the people who use them. The winner will be announced on 8 May at a ceremony at Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion.

Established in 1987 by the European Union, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Barcelona-based Fundació Mies van der Rohe, the EUR 60, 000 Mies van der Rohe Award is one of the most prestigious distinctions for European architecture. (mk/nh)
