The 3,000 prints in the collection include images of Monroe taken on movie sets, in theatres, during magazine photo sessions and in private settings.

They were taken by celebrity photographer Milton H Greene, a personal friend of the temperamental Hollywood actress.

A small selection of 47 images were previewed on Tuesday by international art and photograph critics. These pictures include the iconic Ballerina Sitting by Greene.

The public exhibition, entitled “Good day, Marilyn” will open in July.

“A person walking through the exhibition should be able to see a different Marilyn Monroe on every photograph because these are photographs of an actress and movie star but also a private person,” said exhibition curator Marek Stanielewicz.

The collection also includes images of other actresses such as Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich.

The pictures was purchased for PLN 6.4 million (USD 2.31 million) by the city last year at an auction which sold off part of the collection from the Foreign Debt Service Fund (FOZZ) – a controversial institution which was set up following the fall of communism to pay off Poland’s international debt.

The pictures were seized by FOZZ as part of a settlement in an embezzlement case involving a US businessman in the 1990s. (rg)
