The exhibition, which is on until 21 May, is being held in the Zamek Culture Centre in the western city.

A number of workshops on social tolerance are taking place as part of the exhibition, as well as organised tours run by a local photoreporter Łukasz Cynalewski.

The exhibition comes to Poland just under two weeks since its world premiere in Amsterdam. The World Press Photo exhibition will also be shown in Opole and Kraków later on this year.

“The popularity of this exhibition is probably due to the fact that you can see so many different events all in one place and with an interesting commentary,” director of the Centre Anna Hryniewiecka told PAP.

The exhibition hosts the winning photo of 2014, Danish photographer Mads Nissen’s image of two gay men sharing an intimate moment in a St. Petersburg apartment. The photo is part of a series by the photographer on homophobia in Russia.

Among the photos shown in Poznań are also works of Polish photographer Kacper Kowalski, who won second prize in the ‘Long-Term Project’ category. Kowalski, who is also a pilot, took a number of airborne shots depicting the Polish landscape throughout the seasons.

Some 98,000 photos made by almost 5,700 photographers from 131 countries were submitted to the 58th World Press Photo contest. The jury awarded prizes in eight categories to 42 photographers from across the world in the 2014 competition. (jb)
