Chęciny Royal Castle, which is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Kielce county, south-central Poland, was built in the late 13th century and it remained occupied for over 500 years.
For many years it served as a state prison, and prominent internees included Michael Küchmeister von Sternberg, who became Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights in 1414.

The conservation project cost PLN 8 million, 80 percent of which came from EU coffers. (nh)
