The ceremony, led by Mayor of Szczecin Piotr Krzystek, followed on from Friday's news that the building had beaten off four finalists to win the coveted award.

Szczecin's new philharmonic hall was designed by Barcelona-based studio Barozzi/Veiga.

This winning project finds a convincing formal and spatial strategy for a city which strives for a better future in a fast changing economy and social patterns,” the jury reflected.

The building was hailed for “delivering a dignity to urban life and at the same time enhancing the city’s specific historical identity with a contemporary 'monument'.”

The Mies van der Rohe Award was established by the EU in 1987, and it is given once every two years. Studio Barozzi/Veiga received EUR 60,000 for the victory. Previous winners include Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas. (nh)
