A project for creating a national History Museum was adopted in 2006, and a design was chosen in 2009. The Museum was originally meant to be built above the Łazienkowska Thoroughfare, a major road in Warsaw.

However the cost of the project was estimated at PLN 350 million (EUR 85 million) and the Museum initially failed to attract enough financial interest.

This March, PM Ewa Kopacz announced that the museum would instead be located at the Warsaw Citadel, a 19th-century fortress inside the capital.

The new cost of the project, PLN 310 million (EUR 75 million), will now be financed from the state budget.

The new History Museum will neighbour a Katyn museum and the new Polish Army Museum, both of which are under construction and will also be located inside the Warsaw Citadel.

A fourth museum, the Museum of the Tenth Pavilion, a branch of the Museum of Independence, is already located within the Citadel and will remain operational. This will in effect transform the Warsaw Citadel into one of the more important cultural sites in the city. (sl/jb)
