Almost 600 public libraries across Poland are to take part in the inaugural Library Night on Saturday.

The event is set to kick off at Warsaw’s National Library in the afternoon, with various activities planned until midnight.

The move to set up Library Night comes after the success of Museum Night in Poland, which has turned into a cultural phenomenon.

“Thanks to reading we are able to develop better, have a fuller personality and above all creativity,” National Library director Tomasz Makowski told Polish Radio, Saturday.

The Library Night also kicks off an annual nationwide drive to read to children.

According to a report on Polish reading in 2014 commissioned by the National Library, 40 percent of Poles only read one book a year, while 11 percent of Poles read seven or more books annually. (jb)
