For the last ten years, the city has hosted an annual festival of traditional jazz entitled 'Hot Jazz Spring', and the unveiling of the statue chimed in with the inauguration of this year's event.

The square in front of the concert hall was already named in honour of the Louisiana-born jazz legend several years ago, and in 2012, the idea was put forward to crown the plaza with a statue.

The initiator of the project was the Polish Association of Traditional Jazz from Czestochowa, which organises the festival together with the philharmonic hall, and the design was created by local sculptor Jerzy Kędziora.

Trumpeter and singer Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans in 1901, and he rose to become one of the most inflential figures in the jazz world.

Among his best-loved songs are “We have all the time in the world” which was written by John Barry to accompany 1969 James Bond movie "On her Majesty's Secret Service", and “What a wonderful world.” He died in New York in 1971. (nh)
