Local authorities in the northern Polish town of Słupsk have refused to grant a traveling circus permission to use a local sports arena unless the circus takes animal training out of its show.

Słupsk town hall said it would consider issuing a lease permit for use of the Słupsk Sport and Recreation Centre if the Arena circus agrees to take animal training out of its programme.

The circus had been set to start this week, Tvn24.pl reported.

The town hall has proposed a possible price negotiation if the circus agrees to take animal training out of the show, Tvn24.pl added.

Arena’s administrative director Krzysztof Kupisz did not conceal his surprise at the decision, reportedly saying the circus had visited Słupsk many times previously, and that other circuses visiting Słupsk this year had already included animal training. (jh)
