The event is in tribute to the legendary Polish virtuoso Artur Rubinstein who performed for the delegates to the UN Founding Conference in San Francisco in 1945.

On that historic occasion, he gave vent to his deep disappointment with the absence of representatives from Poland.

“I don’t see the flag of Poland, on behalf of which third cruel war was waged”, he told the audience, adding “And so I will now play the Polish national anthem.”

The public gave Rubinstein a long standing ovation.

The pianist’s daughter, Eva Rubinstein, will be a guest of honour at Thursday’s recital, which is also to be attended by Acting Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva Michael Moller, and Poland’s permanent representative to the UN Office Remigiusz Henczel.

The programme of the recital includes a selection of Chopin’s mazurkas and waltzes, as well as his Variations on Mozart’s “La ci darem la mano”, the Nocturne in F-sharp minor Op. 15 No.1 and the Polonaise in A flat major Op. 53. (mk/rg)
