The digs have been coordinated with construction work on the S8 highway from Białystok in north-east Poland to Warsaw.

Findings include items from the Roman era, ceramics from the 17th century and almost untouched fragments of tanks from the Second World War.

The most valuable finds are from a cemetery dating to the Iron Age in the period 300-500 BC, archeologist Sławomir Żółkowski said. "Some of the findings are items imported from the Roman Empire," he told Polish press agency PAP.

The results of the ongoing works were presented at a press conference by the General Directorate of National Roads and Highways (GDDKiA) in Białystok.

The findings are from the chunk of the S8 highway from the Zambrów bypass to the border of the Podlaskie province.

The excavation work has been going on since May and could last another few weeks, Żółkowski said.

The archeological team have covered over nine hectares and will cover another seven, he added. (jh/rk)
