Polish Oscar-winner Allan Starski to chair Gdynia Film Festival jury

Oscar-winning set designer Allan Starski will chair the jury of the main competition of the 40th Gdynia Film Festival on the Polish Baltic coast, which begins on 14 September.

Starski, who is one of Poland's most seasoned set designers, has worked on films directed by Andrzej Wajda, Agnieszka Holland and Roman Polański, among many others.

He won an Academy Award in 1993 for Best Art Direction for Steven Spieberg's 'Schindler's List'.

The main competition in Gdynia is considered to be the key annual showcase of new Polish films.

Of the 18 movies competing this year, the majority will be premiered in Gdynia.

Features in the running for top award the Golden Lions include Jerzy Skolimowski's '11 Minutes', and 'Anatomy of Evil' by Jacek Bromski.

Also on the jury is Oscar-nominated Polish-born costume designer Anna B. Sheppard, as well as actress Grażyna Szapołowska, director Anna Kazejak-Dawid, composer Antoni Komasa-Łazarkiewicz, director Waldemar Krzystek, set designer Krzysztof Rak and sound director Michał Żarnecki.

The festival runs from 14 September to 18 September. (nh/rk)
