Wrocław hosts music forum

The National Forum of Music (NFM) has opened in the south-western city of Wrocław.

The inaugural concert on Friday featured a selection of works by Polish composers Karol Szymanowski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Witold Lutosławski, Wojciech Kilar and Paweł Mykietyn, as well as Bach and Haydn, performed by leading NFM’s resident ensembles, including the Symphony Orchestra, the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra and the Choir.

With the main concert hall seating 1,800, three chamber halls with a combined seating for 770, excellent acoustics, state-of-the-art recording equipment, exhibition spaces and conference facilities, the National Forum of Music is believed to be among the finest projects of its kind in Central Europe.

Located in the heart of Wrocław (a two-minute walk from the Market Place), the NFM also boasts a number of restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as an underground car park for 660 cars. Saturday is Open Day at the Forum, with visitors touring the place and attending 20-minute concerts in all of its venues.

The NFM serves as an umbrella organisation for 11 instrumental and vocal ensembles and coordinates nine international music festivals, including Wratislavia Cantans, Musica Polonica Nova and Musica Electronica Nova. It also runs numerous educational programmes for various age-groups. It a member of the European Festivals Association, which affiliates festivals from 40 European countries, and of the International Society for the Performing Arts, which brings together over 400 performing arts organizations from all over the world.

Forthcoming events at the National Forum of Music include concerts by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta on Monday and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen under Trevor Pinnock on 10 September. (mk/jh)
