Polish films honoured at Venice Film Festival

Jerzy Skolimowski's '11 Minutes' and Kuba Czekaj's 'Baby Bump' were given special mentions at the 72nd Venice Film Festival, which closed on Saturday night.

Skolimowski's movie, which competed in the main competition, was given a special mention by the Youth Jury.

The Polish-Irish co-production, Skolimowski's first film since 2010's 'Essential Killing', follows 11 minutes in the lives various disparate characters.

It is due to have its Polish premiere next week at the 40th Gdynia Film Festival, the key annual showpiece of new Polish movies.

Meanwhile, Kuba Czekaj's 'Baby Bump' was given a special mention in the Queer Lion strand.

The film follows the plight of 11-year-old Mickey House, “who flees the harsh reality of his corporeal changes and escapes into a fantasy world, accompanied by his animated friend, the Jerboa Mouse – his long-eared alter ego,” according to the movie's press materials.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan film 'From Afar' won the Golden Lion for Best Film in the main competition. Director Lorenzo Vigas' film explores the relationship between a street hustler and a businessman. (nh/rk)
