The thick book of over a thousand pages, is a historical novel about Jakub Lejbowicz Frank, a real-life self-proclaimed Messiah in the region of Podolia, now in western Ukraine, in the eighteenth-century.

“It is hard to assess him unambiguously, the figure was ambivalent and controversial. He is remembered in very different ways: supporters [remember him], as a beautiful, tall, charismatic man; [while his] opponents – as an ugly hunchback who cannot cobble a sentence together,” Tokoarczuk told a press conference during the launch of the book.

This is the second time Tokarczuk has won the award, the first time being in 2008.

The Nike award has been awarded since 1997 by daily Gazeta Wyborcza. (rg/rk)
