Eight Poles move onto 2nd stage of Chopin competition

Following the end of the first stage of the 17th International Chopin Piano Competition in the Polish capital, Warsaw, eight Poles have moved on to the second round.

A total of 43 musicians have qualified to play in the second stage of one of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions.

The names of the competitors was announced on Wednesday evening. They include Poles Łukasz Piotr Byrdy, Łukasz Krupiński, Krzysztof Książek, Łukasz Mikołajczyk, Piotr Nowak, Michał Szymanowski, Andrzej Wierciński and Szymon Nehring.

Poles make up the largest group from any single country to play in the second round of the competition.

Other countries represented in the second stage include China, Japan, and South Korea with five pianists respectively, as well as musisicians from the US, Russia and Canada, Italy, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Croatia, France, Hungary, the UK, Latvia and Greece.

The 17-member jury is led by prof. Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń, a Polish pianist of Bulgarian origin. (rg/rk)
