Conductor Katlewicz dies

Jerzy Katlewicz, the prominent Polish conductor, has died in Kraków at the age of 88.

A graduate of the State Higher School of Music in Kraków, his artistic career was inseparably linked with the city’s Philharmonic, which was the venue of his diploma concert in 1952 and of which he was the longest serving Music Director, from 1968 to 1980.

Katlewicz also worked as Artistic Director of the Noordhollands Philharmonisch Orkest in Haarlem, the Netherlands (1979-1982) and conducted many leading orchestras in Europe and other continents.

He has achieved a high reputation for his interpretations of works by Krzysztof Penderecki and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki.

His honours included diplomas of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for outstanding services in the promotion of Polish music abroad (1974, 1989), the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Reborn Poland (1993), the “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” Medal from the Holy See for the popularisation of the masterpieces of sacred music (1993), as well as the Order of Saint Gregory the Great on the 50th anniversary of his artistic activity (1999).
