"Several entrepreneurs have shown an interest in our film and have declared to contribute PLN 5 million to the production,” read the Smolensk 2010 Foundation, which is the driving force behind the film.

The names of the investors, who have covered more than half the current budget of the film, have not been made public.

Their financial commitment was decisive, because a premier date in March 2016 has been announced.

The screenplay of the film follows a journalist who seeks the truth about the Smolensk catastrophe.

The film did not receive the necessary funding from the Polish Film Institute (PISF).

According to Gazeta Wyborcza, the story of the film is based on the so-called “Macierewicz investigation” of the crash, which implies that Russia was directly involved in the crash.

Antoni Macierewicz is the Defence Minister in the Law and Justice (PiS) government.

Among the films made by Antoni Krauze is “Black Thursday” which focuses on the bloody repression of workers' protests in December 1970. Forty two people died in the clampdown in Gdynia, north Poland. (rg/di)
