The ranking was organised by the Museum of Cinematography in Łódź and the Faculty of Film History and Theory at the city’s University.

The results of the poll are based on opinions by 279 leading Polish directors, script writers, cinematographers, designers, producers and composers of film music.

Made in 1975, “The Promised Land” is an adaptation of the novel of the same title by Stanisław Władysław Reymont, the winner of the 1924 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Set in the industrial city of Łódź at the end of the 19th century, it focuses of the experiences of three young men, a Pole, a German and a Jew, who work together to fulfil their dream of building a factory and become textile industry tycoons.

The film won Wajda numerous awards at prestigious festivals and a nomination for an Oscar in the best foreign-language film category.

The runners-up in the poll are “The Saragossa Manuscript” directed by Wojciech Has and Wajda’s “Ashes and Diamonds”.

The top ten also includes Polański’s “Knife in the Water”, Krzysztof Kieslowski’s “Blind Chance” and Paweł Pawlikowski’s “Ida” – this year’s Oscar winner in the best foreign language film category. (mk/rg)
