The quartets (Nos 1, 3, 6 and 7) were recorded by the Lutosławski Quartet for the Naxos label.

Founded in 2007, the ensemble is based in the city of Wrocław and is currently made up of Bartosz Woroch and Marcin Markowicz – violins, Artur Rozmysłowicz – viola, and Maciej Młodawski – cello.

British musicologist and expert on Polish music Adrian Thomas considers Grażyna Bacewicz’s string quartets “unrivalled in 20th-century Polish music and one of the century’s most significant contributions to the genre”.

The winners of the BBC Music Magazine Awards will be announced at a ceremony on 5 April at Kings Place, London, and in the May issue of the periodical. (mk/nh)
