'Tristan und Isolde' by Polish director to open new season at the Met

The Metropolitan Opera in New York has announced that the first premiere of the 2016/17 season will be Richard Wagner’s "Tristan und Isolde" directed by the artistic director of Poland’s National Opera, Mariusz Treliński.

The production is a joint project by the National Opera of Warsaw, the Metropolitan Opera, the Baden-Baden Festspiele and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

Sir Simon Rattle will conduct and Sweden’s soprano Nina Stemme and the Australian tenor Stuart Skelton will appear in the lead roles.

The production opens on 26 September.

There will be ten performances, with the one on 8 October inaugurating the new season of HD relays to 70 countries.

In Poland, live transmissions from the Met are available in twenty towns. It is expected that Treliński’s production will be watched by up to 1.5 million viewers. (mk/rg)
